I qualified as a dentist from Queens University Belfast in 1984.
Barry Mark (a practice owner, my mentor and lifelong friend) was a tutor at Queen’s University Dental School asked me to join him and work at his practice in Holywood, Co. Down after l qualified.
He encouraged me to carry out as much surgery as possible teaching me his ethics, which l have tried to uphold to this day.
For the next 20 years, even though l really wanted to be a footballer, my wife Claire and myself had five children, and l set up a new practice on the Lisburn Road, Belfast.
Dentistry had changed dramatically in these years, the explosion of Cosmetic dentistry and most noticeably Implant Dentistry.
Dentistry became interesting and l travelled the world learning all aspects of dentistry finally obtaining a master’s degree in Implantology from Universidad Ray Juan Carlos in Marid 2019.
Today, we offer all treatment modalities: Routine, Cosmetic, Periodontal, Orthodontic and Oral Surgery in house.
Most recently we have added Digital Dentistry to our armoury, using intra-oval scanning to our workflow.
I have always been interested in why people grind and fracture their teeth, get periodontal disease and why teeth fracture and this led me to treating, accessing the whole masticatory system / oro – pharyngeal airway, and ultimately treatment of airway obstruction / sleep apnea.
There are four major post graduate programmes l have attended on these subjects:
The Davison Academy, Florida: which tackles all aspects of TMJ Dysfunction, occlusal analysis, and functional aesthetics.
The Sleep and TMJ Therapy Centre, California: organised by Dr Stevie Acmos. His courses are very expansive, an encyclopaedia of knowledge, teaching “motor nerve reflex testing” to help triage and treat “TMJ Syndrome Dysfunction’’.
Clinical formation for Orthopaedics and Orthodontics, Texas: Founder DR Skip Truitt. DR Truitt’s mission taught the importance of orthopaedic development before orthodontic treatment to create beautiful smiles in balanced faces with open airways and healthy TMJ’S.
BTi Technology: founder Dr Eduardo Anitua.
Dr Anitua is one of the foremost clinicians in the world of implant dentistry and dental sleep Medicine.
He patented the use of centrifuging patents own blood, extracting homogenous platelets to form ‘’Platelet Rich Growth Factors,” which I use in every surgical implant placement providing healing and tissue regeneration. I also use PRGF to inject into painful and damaged TMJ’S.
I am a key opinion leader of the company, in the field of dental sleep medicine.
It’s been a busy 10 years, but such fun and very rewarding, learning to holistically treat patients whilst restoring or protecting their teeth and smile.
Over the last 15 years I have attended numerous courses in various aspects of Implantology such as Daniel Buser Guided Bone Regeneration Marcus Hurzeler Soft Tissues Management Courses.
I was a Tutor at 69 Harley Street London Dr Fazeela Osborne-Khan running an Implant year Course. Fazeela was the main Tutor at the Royal College Implant Diploma Course 2017.
